When I Was A Kid...

-We had to be kind and rewind. Sometimes we were even charged a fee when we had been unkind.

This got me thinking, will today's kids even know what rewind means?

I guess they still have rewind on DVD remotes but it's not really "rewinding" anything (or does it just say "Backwards" or "Reverse"). It's like "dialing" a phone number.

Did anyone else hate having to rewind and fast forward cassette tapes and videos to get to the song or part of the movie you wanted to see?

Sheesh. Kids these days. They don't know how easy they've got it.

Yes, as I recall the act of "being kind" was a source of contention at our house in the summer months, coupled with turning off the T.V. (no remote) and turning off the lights (still waiting on the remote)

Oh my gosh...I TOTALLY hated having to try and find a specific song on a tape!! I'd ALWAYS go too far ahead or too far behind! I remember thinking it was so great/fancy when they got those players that would automatically stop when the next song started if you pressed 'play' and 'FF' together, but that was right at the time CD's were taking over so I didn't even get to enjoy that feature for long.

However, I'm very, very, VERY, sad that the days of the "mixed tape" are over...
Kids today will never know/understand that classic symbol of love.

As to the "dialing"...I would often forget what numbers I had already dialed b/c it took so long for the dial to circle back!!! ...especially phone numbers that had a lot of 8's or 9's. :)

I can't play it...I just gave the only tape player we had to SG...but I will say it was not love mushy songs...just cool songs...with some love mixed in...Jeff do you remember?...Me and Elvis, Stop the world, several 77's songs, that is all I can remember right now...Jeff used to have good taste in music...now he listens to snore, bore music on our road trips to Trenton and Arkiesauce...I on the other hand have had a constant love for G-N-R, 80's hairbands, etc!

I once used my college radio station to make a mix tape. I even "DJ'd" between the songs. It was very professional sounding if I can say so. Except for the "mushy" talk. It was for my girlfriend (now my wife) to listen to while she was staying with her Dad for the summer.

It seemed cool at the time, now it's probably one of those things that I'll regret telling anyone.

Don't EVEN ask about the music.

I think the kids of today just email "Date" playlists to each others itunes.

Yes, it did have 77's (probably "Nowhere Else") and Modern English. It also had Unchained Melody and Dancing Barefoot (Both of which were U2 versions), "Sentimental Song" by the Choir, and I think I probably had some Over The Rhine on there as well. Did it have "Shelter" by Lone Justice?

I'm still laughing at your comment, s-g!!....you ACTUALLY DJ'd between songs??!! I've never heard of THAT before. That's hilarious!! I can only imagine how cool you probably thought it was! (I keep laughing just thinking about it...) That's a great senario for a scene in a comedy movie.

And, I HAVE to ask about the music even though you said not to...PLEASE, share the song and why you picked it (unless it's obvious)

Jeffgaret, your guy's mixed tape sounds like it still holds up...I'm impressed. Good music taste.

I'm going to leave the song revealing to Julie (if she'll ever check the blog).

Let me just say that there were several complex factors involved in the musical selection:

1.) It was intended for summer vacation.
2.) I knew the audience very well and what they liked to listen to.
3.) The college radio station's format was Classical. They received singles of "Top 40" songs from record companies but their library was limited.
4.) This was in the mid-80's.
5.) I wasn't trying to compile the ultimate mix of my generation.

Honestly, I don't remember much about it. I'm pretty sure there was a Phil Collin's song, probably one of Madonna's early hits, maybe DeBarge and likely something from **cough**thejets**cough**. One that I do remember is the song from The Breakfast Club, "Don't You".

Quit laughing.

Sorry, I just remembered, the Choir (as in, the band named "The Choir" not an actual choir) song was "About Love" not "Sentimental Song".

I am going to guess that SG also had some New Edition, Lionel Ritchie, and Michael Jackson/Jackson 5 on his mix tape. I can just hear the Barry White voice used for the D.J. sections.

SomeGoat said...

Oh yeah.

Don't forget the Footloose factor. 99.9% chance that something from the Footloose soundtrack was on it.

Barry White? No way. It wasn't like that. It was more of an artificially happy FM Pop-radio station DJ. Kind of like the generic DJ's that they use in the movies when someone on screen is listening to the radio as they pull into the school parking lot on the first day/last day of school or wearing gianormous radio headphones while they rollerblade near the beach, "WOW! It's a SCORCHER out there but here's something to cool things off a bit, it's "Cold As Ice" by Hall and Oatesssss-ah!"

Is that even one of their songs?

Well, SG, sure enough....your mixed tape sounds like it was the essence of what mixed tapes are all about: "totally cheesy"....and makes me miss them all the more. (I got quite a few in my day, I might add!!)

Maz, you didn't comment on my EXTREMELY clever name combo for you and Jeff!! It's like you're a celebity couple now! See, that's how we do it here in LA-LA Land.

Well, well, well. Isn't this special? I am at a disadvantage, coming in on the end of this nifty discussion. Seems that my nice little mix tape has been bandied about all afternoon like somebody's old hackysack. I must pause and measure carefully just how to respond to these (oh so very dated) charges and rumors.

First, I'd like to say that I'd never even heard of a "mix tape" - either as a serious thing or as the butt of so many 80s+- jokes - until quite recently, like in the last year or so. Yes, it's true, even though I actually owned one.

Second, I enjoy making cds of my favorite iTunes and what have you, thereby bring the "mix tape" concept into this century, indeed into this millenium! And again, I had no idea this pasttime was so nerdy/cheesy.

Thirdly, I loved my special music that SG made for me and sent all the way to dumb Florida, where I had to spend the summer away from him. We do agree that the in-between song banter is a little embarrassing, but only if somebody else actually LISTENS to it.

We may have a picture of this piece of music history. SG and I will confer regarding to post or not post the visual, as this piece of sentiment and young luuuv is in the Goat home as we speak.

Yes, Anon., just cut and paste this whole thread, you've got that script started, probably ready to pitch!

And darn it, I LOVED the Jets.

And that was back when Lionel Richie was believable, people.

Um, I have to go use my hot rollers now, and find my lacy leggings.

SG, I washed your acid-washed jeans. Have you seen my ruffly miniskirt??

We all are watching Cosby Show reruns on TVLand, even the 3 BG Gruff. I am not making this up.

did you say "dumb florida"?

Ohhhhh, Foreigner. I didn't know what you meant.

Popular music is one of my weakest trivia categories.

I actually had the mix tape in my hand last night but was to scared to play it. Stay tuned.
